The Lakesman is not just another triathlon. It’s a proper Lake District endurance day: Derwentwater, Keswick, long roads, big views, and the kind of challenge that rewards calm planning.
For Kendal Mint Co, this one feels close to home. Our roots are in the mountains, our fuel comes from Kendal Mint Cake heritage, and our products are built for exactly this kind of “get from here to your Everest” effort.
The official Lakesman 2026 event is based in Keswick on Sunday 21st June 2026, with the Lakesman Half covering a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run. The swim takes place in Derwentwater, the bike heads into the Western Lake District, and the run takes athletes through countryside and spectator-friendly sections around Keswick.
This guide keeps things simple: what to take pre-race, on the swim, bike, run, and post-race for both:

Start with the golden rule: practise before race day
Race day is not the time to test a random gel, a stronger bottle mix, or a breakfast you’ve never used before.
In our triathlon nutrition guide, we recommend introducing sports nutrition 1-6 months before race day, so your body and stomach learn what works. During racing, a good target is usually 60–90g carbohydrate per hour, using a mix of gels, bars and carb drinks like KMC ISO MIX.
Your aim is not to create a complicated science project.
Your aim is simple:
- know what you’re taking
- know when you’re taking it
- know your stomach can handle it
- keep fuelling before you feel empty

Why Lakesman suits KMC fuelling
Lakesman is a local, endurance-heavy event with proper Lake District character. The half course may avoid the big mountain passes, but it still demands steady energy, good hydration and smart pacing.
That’s where KMC fits.
Our gels are designed around our Dual Charge Formula™, using dual carbohydrates, electrolytes and B vitamins, with natural peppermint for a refreshing feel. KMC NRG GEL products provide 27g dual-carbs per serve, with electrolytes and B vitamins.
For athletes who prefer bottles, KMC ISO MIX Raspberry & Mint is an isotonic carbohydrate and electrolyte drink designed to support hydration during exercise.
Lakesman Half / 70.3 Fuelling Summary

Lakesman Half: detailed but simple fuelling plan
PRE: breakfast and final top-up
Keep breakfast boring. That’s a compliment.
Go for something familiar and carb-heavy:
- porridge
- toast or bagels
- banana
- rice pudding
- bottle of carb drink
Team KMC athlete Fraser Minnican uses porridge and a bottle of carb drink before racing, then took a gel around 25 minutes before the swim start in his Ironman Mallorca 70.3 race. (with a slightly unusual tactic of downing a the remainder of his refillable gel pouch - not advised but it works for him!)
A simple Lakesman Half setup:
- 2–3 hours before: porridge or toast + fluids
- 30–45 minutes before: sip KMC ISO MIX
- 15–25 minutes before swim: 1 x KMC NRG GEL
Swim: no heroics, no fuelling
You won’t fuel during the swim.
Your job is to start with energy already topped up, stay relaxed, and get out of Derwentwater ready to ride. The best distance swimmers who go the furthest with the least energy expended. Technique and pacing are critical to an Ironman.
Think of the swim as the gateway to the main fuelling part of the race: the bike.
Bike: this is where you build your race
The bike is where you should do most of your fuelling.
It’s easier to drink and eat on the bike than it is on the run. Don’t waste that opportunity.
A simple 70.3 bike plan:
- 1–2 bottles with KMC ISO MIX
- 1 gel every 30–40 minutes if needed
- Small bites of KMC NRG BAR Original if you prefer some solid fuel
- Optional caffeine gel towards the end of the bike if you’ve practised it
Ben Goodfellow’s 70.3 World Championship fuelling included 3 x 500ml bottles with 80g carbs each using KMC ISO MIX, plus a caffeine gel towards the end of the ride.
Fraser also used high-carb bottles on the bike and kept solid energy coming in small, frequent amounts.
Run: don’t wait until it hurts
The run is where fuelling mistakes show up.
By the time you feel empty, you’re already behind.
A simple Lakesman Half run plan:
- Take a gel early in the run if you didn’t take one in T2
- Then 1 gel every 20–30 minutes depending on pace and stomach tolerance
- Use caffeine only if you already know it works for you
- Sip water/ISO at aid points as needed
Fraser’s 70.3 run strategy was simple: he carried gels out of T2 and took 3 gels total, one every 20 minutes, with the second as a caffeine gel.
That’s a clean model for many strong 70.3 athletes: simple, repeatable, no faff.
Post: start recovery before the drive home
After the finish, your body wants:
- fluids
- electrolytes
- carbs
- protein
You don’t need a perfect recovery meal instantly. Just start.
Good options:
- KMC PRO MIX
- Natural NRG Superfood Bar
- simple meal with carbs + protein
- plenty of fluids
Full Ironman-Distance Fuelling Summary
A full Iron-distance triathlon is typically 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. Historic Lakesman full-distance races have used that classic format, although the official 2026 Lakesman site currently focuses on The Lakesman Half, Aquabike and Bike/Run events. Check the organiser’s latest entry details before finalising your race plan.

Full distance: how to think about it
For the full distance, the biggest mistake is trying to “get away with it”.
You are out there too long for guessing.
The plan should be:
- Swim: start topped up
- Bike: fuel aggressively but steadily
- Run: keep the stomach calm and keep carbs coming in small doses
- Post: recovery starts immediately
For many athletes, the bike is where the race is built and the run is where the fuelling plan gets judged.
Full distance bike plan
Your bike plan should be written before race week.
A simple structure:
- 2–3 bottles with KMC ISO MIX
- Refillable gel flask or refillable gel pouch for easy carbs
- KMC NRG BAR cut into pieces if you prefer some chew
- Caffeine only later in the bike or before the run if you know it suits you
For most long-distance athletes, bottles do the steady work and gels do the topping up.
Full distance run plan
The marathon is not the place to suddenly eat a buffet.
Keep it simple:
- Gel early off the bike
- Then gel every 20–30 minutes if tolerated
- Alternate caffeine and non-caffeine if you’ve practised it
- Sip water/ISO, don’t overdrink
- Keep cooling separate from fuelling where possible
If your stomach starts to turn, slow down, sip, reset, and return to small regular carbs.

A quick note on Fraser Minnican
This is local. This matters.
Team KMC athlete Fraser Minnican is Cumbrian, supported by KMC, and knows how to race hard over 70.3 distance. In 2025, Fraser won The Lakesman Half in 3:54:42, with British Triathlon listing him 1st at the 2025 Lakesman Triathlons in Keswick.
His approach is a useful reminder:
- simple breakfast
- gel before the swim
- carbs on the bike
- gels on the run
- no over-complication
The best race-day plan is the one you’ve practised until it feels boring.
Final Lakesman fuelling checklist
Before race week, make sure you know:
- what you’ll eat for breakfast
- what gel you’ll take before the swim
- how many bottles you’ll carry on the bike
- how many gels/bars you’ll use per hour
- what caffeine you’ll use, if any
- what you’ll take out onto the run
- what you’ll use for recovery afterwards
Don’t wait until Keswick to make the plan.
Train it. Test it. Trust it.
That’s how you fuel your Lakesman.
