Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli's great run of form continues! Following on from their excellent showing at the recent Rás Tailteann stage race our young team tasted success again over the National Road Racing Championships weekend.
The lads performed brilliantly on Friday evening's National Criterium Championships in Redcar. While eventual winner Oliver Wood (unattached) was already 25 seconds up the road on the final lap Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli raced cohesively as a team, marking the moves throughout the race until they perfectly placed their powerhouse Tim Shoreman in the bunch sprint for the remaining podium places.
With a fast and frenetic sprint unfolding Tim was able to take a brilliant 3rd place and a Bronze medal! Post-race duties included some nice podium time, champagne spraying, interviews with television media and signing autographs for young fans.
This was the team's first outing in the new Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team kit and it was great to see it on the podium as a result of some excellent teamwork which was finished off nicely with big Tim's powerful sprint.
Fast forward to Sunday and our young team were lining up again for the National Road Race Championships. Held on an incredibly tough course in Redcar & Cleveland, North Yorkshire with each lap taking in the fearsome Saltburn Bank climb out of Saltburn By Sea the biggest race of the domestic road racing season sees the majority of pro cyclists from the big international teams returning to the U.K. to battle for the honour of wearing the National Championships jersey for a full year of racing.
With a stacked field of the very best U.K. racers taking on this incredibly hilly course it was no surprise to see the race explode very early on, with small groups of riders scattered across the circuit.
It was great to see our featherweight climber Tom Armstrong positioned in the front group for the majority of the race, with his climbing skills coming into effect on this grueling course. With his background competing in some of the toughest races in Spain Tom raced confidently despite being surrounded by riders from some of the biggest teams in the world.
Tom would eventually take an excellent 15th place in a race which saw the majority of riders being eliminated; Tom can be incredibly proud of his performance, being one of only 20 finishers, with 105 DNF's by the end of the race including some very talented international-level riders.
