Fraser's Recap
Felt pretty strong going into the race, run legs had been good, bike was ok and swim had been more or less where it normally is!
Race morning I had the usual porridge pot and a bottle of carb drink before the race. 25 mins before the swim start I took a gel.Swim went ok, I felt strong for about 400m or so but didn’t feel smooth so backed it off and swam at a more comfortable effort than I would have liked. Came out of the swim and was very surprised to see I had split a 22 as it felt slower.
T1 I only had a swig of water to wash the salt out of my mouth.
Onto the bike and I was feeling confident. Within 10km my disc wheel valve cover had come loose and was flapping so I had to pull over just before Port Pollença to take it off as to not risk a littering penalty if it came off.
Fuelling strategy for the bike was 2 x 800ml high carb bottles, some solid energy chews that I nibbled on every 15 mins and then water/hydration from feed stops. Keen to not overload the bike with the climbing on the course. Didn’t ride to power and just went off feel which wasn’t great. It was only once I’d reached the bottom of the descent that I started to feel good and from there until T2 I kept pedalling hard. It was a lonely race, didn’t see any other age groupers as I made my way through the pro female field.
T2 I had all my gels and a little high carb drink in a sandwich bag so grabbed and ran with that. I had a gel every 20mins (3 in total) with the 2nd one being a caffeine gel and then the energy drink lasted the first 5km. I only took water from feed stops for cooling and to hydrate. I felt good on the run, but knew if I pushed too hard too early it would have been slower overall so kept strict even when really strong runners were behind me. I didn’t relax until the final 400m or so when I managed to enjoy the final run into the finish before high fiving my family on the finish line!
Overall I am over the moon with the result even when there was a few things that didn’t go entirely to plan.
